Preschool Screenings

This screening is for both Northern Elementary and Southern Elementary students.

School Will Be Closed on Monday, April 2

The Pendleton County School District, in collaboration with the Pendleton County Education Association and the Pendleton County Board of Education, has decided to close schools on Monday, April 2, 2018.  Our response comes after yesterday’s press conference with the Kentucky Education Association request for statewide rally for public education and school funding. This will allow not just public school employees, but also the public and their families travel to Frankfort to advocate for Funding for Public Education.

Although, closing school is the last thing anyone wants to do, one of the reasons for this decision to close school is because educators feel one of their main responsibilities is to advocate for the children of the Commonwealth.  We have attempted every other means of communication, action, and advocacy.  The budget proposed by our Governor results in a 1.9 million dollar loss to our school district.  We need to make sure the Legislature internalizes the importance of putting our kids and families first, as well as those across the Commonwealth.  We encourage all of our families and community to travel with us in solidarity.  We must educate our lawmakers on the need to find new streams of revenue to fully fund our vital Public Services, including Public Education.

IMPORTANT CHANGE to Solar Eclipse Announcement

In preparation for Monday’s eclipse staff at the schools were reviewing the safety labels on the glasses purchased.  It was determined that while all glasses had the necessary labels, it was found that some had not been purchased from vendors that were listed on the NASA approved list.  After discussions with district and school administration, it was determined that we were not comfortable in being able to ensure the safety and well-being of all students throughout the day, particularly the afternoon dismissal and transportation time home.

Therefore school will be canceled for Monday August 21, 2017.  This day will be added to the end of the year as a make-up day.  I apologize for the late notice but the safety of our students is of the utmost importance.

R. Anthony Strong, Ed.D

Important Information--Solar Eclipse eclipse

On August 21, 2017 we will experience a total solar eclipse, an event that hasn’t occurred over the U.S. mainland since 1979.  A total solar eclipse, which is when the moon completely covers the sun, will occur across 14 states in the continental U.S. along a 70-mile-wide swath of the country.  While Pendleton County is not located in this area, we will still be able to view the partial solar eclipse.

This event will be an extraordinary educational opportunity for our students.  Some of our schools will have special events and activities related to the eclipse, and more information will be sent home from the respective schools.

While this event is extremely exciting for our students, we must also acknowledge the importance of proper eye safety.  The eclipse must be viewed only through proper eclipse glasses.  All schools will provide students with proper viewing glasses that have been approved.

Southern Engineers New science standards have Southern students engineering several different projects.  Mrs. Cooper's 4th grade class has been involved in a science unit on heat.  As part of this unit, the students were asked to research solar ovens.  Students applied their findings on solar ovens to engineer their own.  The ovens were taken outside and used to cook smores.  Students had the opportunity to walk around and see how well all of the ovens were cooking smores.
Ms. Moore’s class has also been learning about engineering. They began by reading a story about gnomes wanting to find an easier way to get to town than having to walk all the way around a lake to go to the town to sell their vegetables. Their bridges had to hold the weight of three crayons which is equal to a gnome and wheelbarrow full of vegetables. Students had fun learning about and building their bridges. Students worked hard to improve their bridges.
Southern has many great engineers!

Adams has illustrated approximately 37 books.

Back To School

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you have all had a wonderful summer. I have enjoyed some time off but I am very excited about the upcoming school year and our “Wild About Learning” theme. I will do everything I can to make this our best year yet.

There will be some new faces at Southern this school year. Lynn Orr has transferred from Sharp Middle School and will be working as one of our intervention teachers. Rebecca Schuster was hired as a special education teacher and Nicole Thompson is joining our 3rd grade team with 9 years of teaching experience.

We hope you can join us for our annual “Good Start” on August 8th from 4:00 to 6:00. The first day for students is August 14th. I know many of you have been asking about school supplies and classroom assignments. Student packets will be mailed home sometime next week. The packet will include information about which homeroom teacher your child will have next year. There is a link below that will take you to our school supply list. I look forward to working with you and I hope you enjoy the remainder of your break.
