Parent Letter

Dear parents and Guardians,
Wow, the summer has just flown by and the first day of school is right around the corner! I am very excited that I have the opportunity to work with your child. Fifth grade is a very exciting year, where the students really learn to work with one another as well as independently. It will be an eventful journey as you watch your fifth grader grow over the course of the year.
I want to take a moment to introduce myself to you. My name is Ms. Tori Pugh and this is the start of my ninth year at Northern Elementary School. In 2009, I graduated from Midway College with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. I graduated in 2014 with my Master of Arts in Teaching and Leadership with an endorsement in Special Education.
Fifth grade is a very special time for students.  Everyone will learn and grow tremendously over the course of the next year!  As your fifth grade social studies teacher, I will use a variety of active instruction as well as key concepts to tap into students' prior knowledge.  I will also incorporate multiple intelligence teaching strategies to engage a variety of learning types and organized reading notes.  Throughout the year we will review maps and globes and geographic landforms, as well as take an in depth look at the history of our nation.  We will start with a review of geography, followed by studying the lives of Native Americans that inhabited America, continuing with explorers, colonization, slavery, the Revolutionary War, the Constitution, and the Civil War.
I am thrilled to have your child in my class this year. Although I will only have your child in class for a short time, I want to make a contribution that will last a lifetime. In my classroom, I promote an atmosphere of safety, trust, and respect. I work hard to build a sense of community among my students, and I emphasize the idea of teamwork. I value cooperation and collaboration both in my classroom and as I work with my peers. I believe that great things can happen when we work together! Northern Elementary is a place where I really feel like part of a strong community and part of a winning team.

Sincerely,

Ms. Pugh
