911 Day of Service and Remembrance

Sharp NJHS Chapter has Service Party

The Sharp Middle School Chapter of National Junior Honor Society turned their annual Christmas celebration into a service party.  The group spent their party time after school creating blankets for patients at Children’s Hospital, packaging holiday meals for those in need, and making hand drawn cards for families in Newtown Connecticut.

During the last NJHS meeting students decided what food items each member would contribute to create boxes of food fit for a holiday meal.  The students had been bringing nonperishable food items and fleece for blankets to store in Mrs. Lustenberg’s room for the past couple of weeks.  At the Christmas party, they sorted the food into empty paper boxes, wrapped them in Christmas paper, and attached a holiday greeting.  The boxes, as well as hams, were delivered to the resource center the next day to be delivered to families.  During the party, students also created 10 no sew blankets in a variety of colors and patterns to be delivered to children during the Christmas holiday.

When students finished blankets, they decided to take simple pieces of white paper, markers, and crayons to create handmade cards for people in Newtown Conn.  During a weekend press conference, the father of young Sandy Hook Elementary victim, Emilie Parker, told the world that Emilie would be the first person to go grab a piece of paper and make a card when she saw someone sad.  The students decided that making these cards would be a good way to honor the memory of this little girl and send love and prayers to family and friends.
