I have 3 children, ages 38, 37 and 33. I have five wonderful grandchildren, McKenzie 15, Devon 8, Reagan 8, Laci 7 and Hudson 6 weeks.
Working in education for my 24th year, I am currently teaching at Southern Elementary School. I have been involved in the special education field my entire teaching career and still enjoy working with special needs students. I attempt to make my classroom a safe environment for students even though they may struggle with some academic areas. I want students to feel that the can ask for help in any area -- academic as well as social. I want students to feel comfortable coming to me when they are having any sort of problem and if I cannot help them I can seek help for them from other people.
I like a very structured classroom but students know the expectations and most comply with expectations. I encourage asking for help but also listening when instruction is being done. When they get to the work world, not all supervisors will be willing to provide repetition if they are not attempting to grasp the information needed to complete the task. It is a tough world out there and I feel part of my job is to make the students ready to face the world and be able to succeed.
I am not a big advocate for homework but do feel that if it is given, is is imperative that students complete it and turn it in. This is all part of learning responsibility for the real world. I am willing to assist students with homework for any subject but it is their responsibility to ask me for help. It is impossible to keep up with homework for each individual student each day.
